Last night a friend and I went to an LYS and I bought a book called Knit Socks and some yarn and started my first socks. My friend started the same pair with me and my goal is to get to the heel of Stockinette Starter before I see her on Monday so we can work through the tough parts together.

This is my first pair of socks and could be the beginning of a long a painful relationship :)

Knitting projects and Thanksgiving Re-cap

So I was gonna have some free time at work today and was planning on blogging in that free time. I packed up my camera to take to work and found my camera cable to upload pictures from it. I brought knitting to talk about. I was so organized. When I got ready to blog, I found that my camera cable must still be on my desk at home because it is not here. Oopsie. Although those of you who know me are not terribly surprised at my inability to leave the house with the items I need. However my roommate has come along and saved the day. YAY Roomie!

Anyway. I have begun a top-down raglan pullover in all stockinette using the yarn from the ugly garage sale sweater I picked up recently. My plan was to take this yarn and this project with me on the upcoming trip for work. I however, could not wait to get it started because I spent much too much time thinking about the technicalities of this sweater and I am just to the center of the bust with the arm stitches sitting on some waste yarn for now. This sweater will likely be finished before I even leave on this work trip, but that is ok. I will wear it on the ship and I will be warm.

I have decided I may do some stockinette cables on stockinette background down the sleeves and maybe a few near the waist. I have never seen this, although I am sure the entire knitting world excluding myself knows what this looks like. I cannot for the life of me find a photo of this concept anywhere and so as far as I am concerned I am inventing the wheel :)

I had decided I was going to knit my first pair of socks, from recycled yarn from a black wool sweater vest I got at a yard sale the same day as the ugly garage sale sweater, however, when I began to rip this sweater out, I quickly noticed that it was not going to work. It was cut from knitted fabric and sewn together. This means that the parts this vest consisted of were not knit from one piece of yarn but each row is one piece of yarn. Foiled Again!!

Since it is a wool/nylon but mostly wool blend, I may felt it and see what I can cut out of it, coasters (I don't have any use for coasters), mittens (ech, doesn't sound appealing) or perhaps a small case for my camera and cable (hmm.... we may have a winner there). I don't know. I will have to wait to see what it felts like and that won't be any time soon.

I put some work stuff on the ship I will be on before it left port so that I wouldn't have to fly with some of it. Included was the yarn, book and needles to make Sexy Ribs Pullover from Big Girl Knits that I discussed making in a previous post. That will be a big project so hopefully it will keep me busy on the ship.

While at home for thanksgiving I finished my voodoo wrist-warmers from knitty.com although, no matter how many times I count the damn things, they are not quite identical, although they both fit and function. I may rip the second one back, just a little and fix it, but then again... they are just for me... we'll see what I do with that. If I wait long enough the question answers itself :)

On another note I was planning to record last week's episode of gilmore girls and I completely forgot. I am so mad at myself because not only did I miss another episode of gilmore girls, but I missed a gilmore girls about KNITTING! If any recorded it, feel free to loan me your copy. I would love you forever. I found this button

at a wonderful blog that I will now be reading every day!

This Thanksgiving was the best holiday I have ever shared with my family. With three younger sisters (most of us were teenagers at the same time and the youngest is a teenager now) usually there is a fight of some kind although in recent years, since we don't all share one bathroom anymore we have been getting along better.

However Thanksgivings in the past have almost always worked out in this manner. T-day begins with mom not having enough time to finish the pumpkin pies, pumpkin roll and whatever other dishes we need to get done to take to gramma's. The TV is running football in the background.

My sisters and I put off taking our showers because, none of us are looking forward to doing our hair, so we are all fighting for the bathroom to shower at the last possible minute. Inevitably, my father puts on holey sweatpants and slippers, a straw hat and says he is ready to go what is taking everyone else so long. Mom takes time from the pumpkin rolls to tell him to change and one of his daughters has to follow him to the closet to pick out his clothes. Mom showers last because she was busy cooking and we are all in a mad dash to fit all 6 of us and food in the car.

By this point. Someone is not talking to someone else. Never fails someone is fighting.

Now THIS year was amazing!

This year, three sister's shared two bathrooms and everyone was showered on time. Another sister was at her own house and hosted dinner. All the food was cooked beforehand and warmed day of. All four grandparents were there, this means one dinner and time to share with my immediate family. No siblings fought. No one cried. No fighting over cleaning or doing dishes, we all helped unasked even the youngest. Games were played.

my yummy yummy dinner. yes i took a picture of my dinner. so what?

On Friday my sisters and I all went with my mom to make tiles for her newly decorated kitchen at one of those paint your own ceramics places.

I think mine came put pretty well. It was supposed to be birds of paradise, but I didn't look them up before I went. Oh well.

It was wonderful! Then, because thanksgiving weekend movie has become a tradition for my siblings and I, we went to see Happy Feet and the Imax on Saturday and Ice Skating. It was such a good holiday. I left feeling very sorry to leave which is a first for a holiday weekend. I think we are all finally growing up. and dad may finally have learned to dress himself.
